Millions of bubbles floated and hovered over the Ocean Terminal Forecourt at Harbour City mall to the delight of thousand of spectators who attended the launch of the Bubble Up Public Art Project on August 4th. The event marks the opening of the first solo art exhibition of Japanese artist Shinji Ohmaki in Hong Kong.
Ohmaki is known for his dynamic installations and art works featuring bubbles. In 2008, he designed and created a "Bubble Machine" which can produce 10,000 bubbles per minute and developed non-toxic soap bubble for one of his signature artworks "Memorial Rebirth". The performance has toured over 20 cities in Japan, Taiwan and Australia. It was also the opening performance for the first Setouchi Art Festival in 2010.
For the Bubble Up Public Art Project at Harbour City, Ohmaki transported his bubble machines and non-toxic bubble formula from Japan to Hong Kong to stage the 20 bubble performance shows. He setup a specially-designed 3-meter tall, multi-level pyramid at the center of the Ocean Terminal Forecourt where 45 bubble machines were installed at different levels and directions to produce 10 million bubbles under the backdrop of Victoria Harbour. The bubbly experience brings back fun childhood memories and makes for an ideal backdrop for selfies and videos.
The show runs daily until August 20th at 2:00pm and 6:30pm. Each performance includes 15-20 minutes of bubbly moment! Admission is free. Harbour City is located at 3 - 27 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui Kowloon, Hong Kong.
