Tung Wan Beach is a popular beach in Ma Wan Island. It is known for its long stretch of white sand, turquoise waters and stunning views of Aberdeen and Lamma Island especially at night. The beach is perfect for swimming because of its very clean water quality. There are numerous restaurants serving good and affordable meals.
The beach is also very near other Hong Kong attractions including Noah's Ark Theme Park and the spectacular Tsing Ma Bridge. Despite these crowd drawing factors, the Tung Wan Beach remains to be a quiet and less crowded Hong Kong destination.
Tung Wan Beach is consisted of two sections separated by the Park Island ferry pier. The section on the Noah's Ark side offers a 400 meter long beach front and is the more popular one. The other stretch in the north is much shorter at only about 100 meters long. It is frequented by residents of the Park Island Apartments nearby.
Because of its great views of the engineering marvel that is the Tsing Ma Bridge as well as the massive Noah's Ark, Tung Wan Beach is a popular venue for taking weeding photos and tourist snapshots. Another bridge, called Kap Shui Mun Bridge, together with the massive Tsing Ma, frame the channel and offer a picturesque vista.
Another popular attraction in the area is the monument honoring Hong Kong's first Olympic medalist, Lee Lai Shan. The famed windsurfer's statue stands in a small garden and children's playground near the beach. Shan practised her sport in Tung Wan when she was young.
Through a side door, Noah's Ark is easily accessible from the beach. Beach combers can pass through the door to dine in the theme park's big buffet restaurant without paying for admission tickets.
Much cheaper meals can be had at the several restaurants that line the beachfront. Ma Wan Island residents, which are mostly expats and business people, are said to be responsible for keeping these restaurants alive and the prices affordable.
